Loxley woods.
Ash tree study. October 2022.
Made in the studio from sketches. Experimenting with mark making and paint application to create a sense of movement. I really like the interplay between the negative space of the sky and the positive shapes of the trees.
Loxley Woods, October.
Ash tree study 2022.
Looser brushwork, looking to create a sense of space and capture the movement of the trees in the breeze.
Chinese Elm.
Acrylic on canvas, 90cm x 60cm
A beautiful example of this rare tree, found in the gardens of Cossington Park.
One of my favourite summer subjects with the summer sun creating patterns of light and shade.

Wych Elm, Cossington Park. Summer.
Acrylic on board 30cm x 45cm
A beautiful tree in the gardens opposite. The twisting trunk has been an image I have often returned to. Here the summer breeze catches the heavy foliage.

One of a series of small landscsapes I made from sketches. Huddled in the studio as the winter light grew gloomy. This one looked more at suggesting texture through mark-making. Im pretty sure I used wooden forks and old kitchen knife on this one. Always worth a go.
Shapwick Church
Acrylic 50cm x 30cm
I made a series of paintings of Polden churches in the Easter of 2021. Blue skies belied the creeping spring chill.

February Sweet Track study
A sketch made with water soaking into my boots. Started in water colour then overworked with colour pencils and oil pastels.

Winter trees against a faint glimmer of sun, the sound of rooks, a chill in the air, a quiet place of calm.
Shapwick Nature Reserve, March 2023
Pale sunshine, still reflections broken by the gliding swans.
Sunshine morning, coffee from a flask. Looking towards Kerfany across the Belon estuary.
Above Port Lamat, looking North.
A contrast between the textures and patterns of the cliffs and the simplicity of the flat sea and cloudless sky.
Doelan June 2023
Always love the classic image of the lighthouse at Doelan. You see so many photographs and paintings of it however that is a bit of a challenge to do something beyond the cliche. Unusually for me this is a straight watercolour. I love the shapes of the pine trees that form the foreground element and take some of the focus away from the "Phare Aval".

The first lockdown proved to be a a kick start for me. Teaching had taken over and my work for twenty years was pretty much a series of sketchbooks that recorded family life. The death of my elder brother, Gary, and the strange period of Lockdown lead me to begin painting again. A series of
Dandelions and Cow Parsley.
Acrylic on board.
15cm x 30cm approx
Painted in the first few days of lockdown. Nature springing with vitality as the sun warmed the earth. A bunch of flowers picked from the garden and an opportunity to begin looking closely at the world around us.
Blue bells and Everlasting wall flowers.
Acrylic on board.
15cm x 30cm approx
Painted on April 15th on the front path, greenfly getting stuck in the paint. The Covid19 spring sun was surprisingly strong and created a dynamic shadow that echoed the delicacy of the flowers.

15cm x 30cm approx
Painted on the 10th of April from a bunch of apple blossom, plucked from one of the trees in the back garden and a snippet of forsythia. The yellows and whites were the dominant colour in the garden, glimmering against uncommonly blue skies and green grass.

The starting point of my Brittany holiday lockdown project. My family and I were booked to visit Southern Brittany during Easter, a regular occurence over the last ten years. Covid19 put an end to that. Instead I went on a virtual painting holiday, making paintings every day in a two hour period from 11am to 1pm. I used photographs I ha
