Born in Middlesbrough in 1964, Nigel studied Art at Cleveland College of Art and Fine Art at Canterbury College of Art before completing an MFA at the University of Newcastle. He combined working as an exhibiting artist with roles as a part time lecturer. He also completed a number of Artist in Residence posts before undertaking a PGCE i
Born in Middlesbrough in 1964, Nigel studied Art at Cleveland College of Art and Fine Art at Canterbury College of Art before completing an MFA at the University of Newcastle. He combined working as an exhibiting artist with roles as a part time lecturer. He also completed a number of Artist in Residence posts before undertaking a PGCE in 1995. After two years working as a lecturer at South East Essex College in Southend he moved to work in the secondary sector, becoming Head of Art at Churchill Academy in Somerset. At the end of 2024 He retired from teaching after 30 years to focus upon his own work and hosting workshops in the South West..

Nigel's work primarily begins with looking and drawing. Everything builds from this. starting point. For him drawing is an investigation, a method of recording an experience and expressing ideas and emotions. The subject matter, whether it be a woodland view, or a coastal scene or the dynamic movement of a figure help suggest his approach and influence his choice of materials. At all times he seeks to extend his visual vocabulary to communicate something about the world we live in.
