I love painting, the application of colour, texture and mark to a surface. The balance is always shifting between these three key elements, governed by the subject, the conditions and time. Some works may take time, requiring a process of development where the layering of techniques create a rich and subtle surface. Other pieces may be more spontaneous, produced with intent and at speed to capture the subject.
On a simple level it all begins with looking and drawing. Everything builds from that. A drawing is an investigation, a method of recording experience, of expressing ideas and emotions. The starting point is never the same, but the repetition of themes and methods of work creates a visual vocabulary that communicates something about the world I inhabit.
